Arroyo, Ignacio is a Senior Partner of the firm Ramos & Arroyo, Abogados, an International Arbitrator and Professor of Commercial Law at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Deusto (Bilbao, Spain), a Doctor of Laws from the University of Bologna (Italy), a Diplôme de droit Comparé from the University of Strasbourg (France), and an LL.M. from Harvard University (USA). Professor Arroyo is the President of the Spanish Maritime Law Association (SMLA) and is a Past President of Harvard Law School Association of Europe (HLSAE). He is also a Titulary Member of the CMI. Professor Arroyo is the author of numerous books on international maritime law. He is also the General Editor of the Anuario de Derecho Marítimo (Maritime Law Yearbook) and Member of the Editorial Board of The Journal of Business Law (Sweet & Maxwell, London) and Il Diritto Marittimo (Genoa). During his career he has been awarded the Dioscuri Award by the Lega Navale Italiana (2002), the Leone Bolaffio Prize (Bologna, 1972) and the Premio del Istituto delle Assicurazioni (Roma, 1973).
Bishop, Archie is a Solicitor both in England and Hong Kong, an Examiner in Admiralty and between 1988 and 2000 Senior Partner of the firm Holman Fenwick and Willan. He is now a Consultant. He joined Holman Fenwick and Willan in 1960 after seven years at sea as a deck officer with the P&O line. Since that time he has specialized in collision, salvage, total loss and all other casualties in which his nautical expertise is of value. Mr. Bishop is the Legal Adviser to the International Salvage Union, the Chairman of the Steering Committee of the London Shipping Law Centre, a CEDR Accredited Mediator, an author of numerous educational courses on maritime law, and a visiting lecturer at IMLI and the University College London. He is a frequent contributor and speaker at international conferences.
Caffio, Fabio was born in Taranto and graduated with full marks in Law at the University of Rome. Nowadays he works in the Italian Navy General Staff. As an expert of maritime law R. A. Caffio was representative of the IT MOD in several international meetings concerning maritime delimitations, negotiations of maritime agreements, PSI and SUA Conventions. He participated also to the meetings of the International Group of experts convened to draft the San Remo Manual on International Law applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea (1994) and he was a Member of the Italian delegation to the Diplomatic Conference for the Statute of the International Criminal Court (1998). R. A. Caffio is a Member of both the International Society for Military and Law of the War and the International Institute of Humanitarian Law. He contributes to several law reviews.
Dürler, Reto was born in Basel and educated at the Universities of Basel and Geneva, where he studied Law, Contemporary History and Languages. He is fluent in German, French, Italian, Spanish, English, Portuguese and Russian. His first professional assignment was at the Federal Institute of Intellectual Property in Bern. In 1988 Dr Dürler passed the examination to the diplomatic service of his country. Subsequently he served in Pretoria/South Africa, Bonn/ Germany and in various functions with the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland. Between 2000 and 2002 he was Head of the Division of International Affairs in the Federal Ministry of Health of Switzerland. In 2005 Dr Dürler assumed his functions as Head of the Swiss Office for Maritime Navigation in Basel.
Faghfouri, Mahin holds an LL.B. from Tehran University (hon.), an LL.M. in Maritime Law from London University (UCL), and a Ph.D. in Maritime Law from the University of Wales (UWIST). As the Chief of the Maritime Legislation/Legal Section of the Division for Services Infrastructure for Development and Trade Efficiency at UNCTAD, Dr Faghfouri worked on maritime law issues and was responsible for the work within UNCTAD on maritime law as well as multimodal transport including the 1999 International Convention on Arrest of Ships, the 1993 International Convention on Maritime Liens and Mortgages, and the UNCTAD Minimum Standards for Shipping Agents. She was also responsible for UNCTAD’s work on bills of lading, charterparties, general average, legal aspects of electronic commerce, multi-modal transport, and maritime and container security. Since September 2005, Dr Faghfouri is the President of the International Multimodal Transport Association.
Fitzmaurice, Malgosia holds a chair of public international law at the Department of Law, Queen Mary, University of London. She specializes in international environmental law, indigenous peoples, water law and the law of treaties. Professor Fitzmaurice published widely on all these subjects. In July 2001, she was invited to deliver lectures on International Protection of the Environment at the Hague Academy of International Law. She lectured widely in the UK and abroad at various universities, such as Utrecht and Brussels, Oslo, University of Lapland and at the World Bank in 2001. She also participated in many international conferences. Until 2001, she was a member of the Board of Editors and one of the Editors of the Netherlands Yearbook of International Law. She is the Editor in Chief of the International Community Law Review and a Co-Rapporteur of the International Law Association Committee on Non-State Actors. Professor Fitzmaurice was a keynote speaker at many international conferences. She taught extensively in various law schools, including the USA, most recently at the Berkeley University School of Law.
Grbec, Mitja graduated with distinction at IMLI. During 2001 to 2004 he was the Head of the Legal Department of the Logistic Company Fersped d.d., Ljubljana, Slovenia, while between 2004 and 2006 he held the position of assistant lecturer at IMLI where he still lectures on Marine Environmental Law as a visiting lecturer. In 2006 to 2008 he was a member of the Governmental Working Group for the Establishment of a Euro-Mediterranean University with its seat in Slovenia, while in the period 2007 to 2009 he was a private consultant and a member of various (Slovenian) governmental groups on the Law of the Sea. Currently, he is a part-time lecturer at the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transportation of the University of Ljubljana and the acting Head of the Logistics & Maritime Affairs Research Department within the Technological, Environmental and Logistic Centre (TEC Ltd), Koper, Slovenia.
Griggs, Patrick CBE joined the well-known London-based firm of maritime lawyers Ince & Co in 1958, became a partner in 1965 and was appointed Senior Partner in 1989. During his professional career he specialized in maritime and aviation casualty work including the Torrey Canyon, the Aegean Captain/ Atlantic Empress, the Herald of Free Enterprise, Piper Alpha, the Marchioness/ Bowbelle, British Airtours (Manchester), British Midland (Kegworth) and many other major disasters. He retired in 1994 and became Secretary/Treasurer of the British Maritime Law Association. In 1997 he was elected President of the CMI and retired from that post in 2004. In 2005 he was appointed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for services to maritime industry. Since retiring he has continued to be involved in the work of CMI and represents CMI at IMO meetings. He is a member of the Governing Board of IMLI where he is a regular visiting lecturer.
Jacobsson, Måns studied at Princeton University in the United States, after which he studied law at Lund University in Sweden, graduating in 1964. He served as a judge in Sweden at district court and appellate court level and as Head of the Department for International Affairs of the Swedish Ministry of Justice. He held the post of President of Division of the Stockholm Court of Appeal. From 1985 to 2006 he was Director and Chief Executive Officer of the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds (IOPC Funds) in London. He is a member of the Panel of the Singapore Maritime Arbitration Centre as well as member of the International Maritime Conciliation and Mediation Panel. He is also a member of the Executive Council of the CMI. Mr Jacobsson is Visiting Professor at the WMU in Malmö (Sweden) and at the Maritime Universities in Dalian and Shanghai (People’s Republic of China) and Visiting Fellow at IMLI in Malta. He also lectures at a number of other universities and institutions in various countries. He is member of the Steering Committee of the London Shipping Law Centre. He has published numerous articles in various fields of law, such as maritime law, patent law, nuclear law and treaty law. In 2007 he was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws at Southampton University (UK). Since his retirement from the IOPC Funds he is working as a consultant in maritime and environmental matters.
